Consonant Digraphs (Lesson 19): Introducing CK, CH, NG, SH, TH, and WH

The consonant digraphs video lesson below kicks off the second section of Story Hour Academy’s free online video curriculum for beginning reading and writing.

Students can take this lesson once they know the letter names and letter sounds for the 16 consonant letters in the English alphabet that make just one consonant sound.

If a student can answer the following two questions, they are ready for the consonant digraphs video lesson.

1. Can you tell me the letter name and letter sound for the following uppercase letters?

B D F H
J K L M
N P Q R
T V W Z

2. Can you tell me the letter name and letter sound for the following lowercase letters?

b d f h
j k l m
n p q r
t v w z

If a student can’t answer these questions, that’s okay. They can learn about all the single-sound consonants in lessons 1-18. Start at lesson 1 here.

Ready to learn about consonant digraphs?

A consonant digraph is a consonant sound that is represented with two consonant letters.

The consonant digraphs video lesson below introduces students to six popular consonant digraphs: ck, ch, ng, sh, th, and wh. These are not the only consonant digraphs in the English language, but they show up very frequently in children’s books so we cover them early in the Story Hour Academy curriculum.

In this video lesson, students will write down the 6 consonant digraphs, learn the sound or sounds they represent, write down words containing ck, ch, ng, sh, th, and wh, and then look for these digraphs in a poem about a mythical beast.

Simply press play to get started.
